Mornin' I am on the cusp of a purchase. I would be interested in soliciting opinion on which of the two computer recording interfaces listed in the title my fellow TB'ers would suggest. Thanks.

Onyx:
$700
4 pres
4 line ins
8 analog outs
24 bit/192 kHz
Hi Z inputs (no direct box needed)
Insert points on first 2 inputs
Includes Tracktion

FireStudio:
$700
8 preamps
2 instrument inputs
ADAT I/O
SPDIF and MIDI I/O
24 bit/96 kHz
Insert points on first two channels
Lots of software, including Cubase LE and Acid

I just bought an Onyx 1640, but only because I need the flexibility of a mixer. If you're looking for a rackmounted interface the Presonus products are a great bang for the buck. I have owned two Firepods and a Digimax LE and they get the job done quite well.

I have a firepod that works well. The pre's are pristine. It is pretty easy to set up and get working and the customer support is very good from Presonus.

I have heard of some issues with getting the onyx to run properly, but can't say I really know anything about it.

Really, it depends on what you need it for. I am very happy with my Firepod. YMMV.

I have a Firepod and it works great. I'm using it with Cubase SE. Very easy to use. Sounds good using condenser/dynamic mics and as well as direct ins.
