Talking Project recording / practice room

Sign in to disble this ad
Project recording / practice room

so I bought a house (fixer upper) and since then I have been working on every room and the outside of it

so I have been putting off doing major work on a practice room and just doing some minor stuff here and there

Now with my roommate moved and out and 3 weeks a few from my wedding I am going to start doing some finishing touches
here are the photos of the area when I was doing the pre buy inspection

This shot if from the laundry area

this is looking from the future room in to the laundry room

future recording room

stay tuned for more .. this whole project is going to be very low budget!

so there are many issue with this electrical, plumbing, gas lines being the major ones also money and I am trying to do this with the least amount of money possible because I will probally sell this house in the next couple years so this would need to double as a office/ playroom for future owners

Before layout

After layout

so in a nutshell I am tearing out a back wall of a closet and building a wall in the laundry and storage area

so I first dri-locked the whole laundry /storage room

and sealed the basement floor, then tore out the back of the closet wall and framed in the 2x3 wall, insulated with R-21and then put up plywood car siding (not the most ideal for sound isolation- but cheap and easy and looks ok)

I also insulated the sealing and put up fabric then lattice work (this also is cheep and kills some of the sound but I can pull it off fast is a pipe breaks or is there is a electrical problem) lattice work also is a defuser and is cheep !

here is a photo of the wall notice the crappy carpet I ripped out of the 2nd floor ( it worked well for 2 years in the basement practice room)

in this photo you can see the dri-locked wall and the crappy carpet

here you can see the large amount of duck work I have to avoid and you can also see the lattice work

I got some more painting done ! and new carpet in I am not going to have time until the wedding to do the border work (well I might who knows) I willl try to take some newer photos tomorrow

BTW.. for people asking I am running a full version of Cubase 4, Wavelab and I am using 2 Firepods chained together for 16 channels, my friend brandon also has a firepod so if we are doing huge projects we can do 24 channels at once

That is quite the impressive plumbing you have there. Very industrial looking. Haven't you guys heard of copper tubing Just kidding.

But to get on topic.... how big is the room? I like the siding, looks good. And the lattice is a cool solution. While it may not be optimal, it looks like the room is working for you.

I love looking at photo-diaries of rooms being converted for music rooms. Does anyone have any other good examples please?

Thanks for some of the positive feed back while this room is not Ideal I am making the best of it and I think what I am doing will increase the homes value as a pratice room, office, kids play room or guest bedroom who knows

the room is 9ft x 15 ft

I also took some more photos of some more stuff that I have gotten done

This is a shot of the old closet whis is now a walk way / wall storage for cables and stands I think I will devise a better way to store cables one of these days

the other side (very bare right now need to put the rest of the stuff away)

Looking in to the room (notice the less then ideal pipes and hvac)

here is the painted wall that was cheep dark sided fake wood (BTW all the paint was left over from painting the outside of the house so there was no additional cost )also a white board very important for notes when writing or recording !

notice newer carpet $100 Menard's special also some recycled room treatment (cloth to make it look new again from walmart $5.00) and super window plug made from alot of building scraps

here is a shot of the amp and electric Drumset I have the DW stored away for now because I am working on a hard rock projet and the small dw sounds better for jazz, funk, and acoustic stuff
BTW I love the color of the new carpet

well I wheeled in my DAW its not all put together but can see it is a bit more effective now

that is it for now I am going to sell my old practice pa speakers for some smaller ones and hopefully hook up the daw tonight so I can do some recording this weekend

well also I have never worked in the construction field most of what I have done has been reading on home recording bbs and watching my dad build my back ground is all in music (tuba, bass) telecommunications and sales

there is still so much more to do so keep watching !
