Propellerhead Reason - Anybody use this?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know it's not an audio recording package but I'm always intrigued by the demos on the Propellerhead website. I'm not new to audio recording packages but definately a 'noob' when it comes to software samplers, virtual instruments and effect plugins.

Whoever uses it, have you found it to be a good tool for a variety of music projects or just an option limited to techno/electronica styles of music?

Really the bottom line question is, am I better off forking over the $400+ for a more popular package like Sonar or Cubase?

Thanks

You really have to decide what it is that you want. Do you want a synth rack or are you looking to upgrade your current DAW software? I was considering buying it and "Rewiring" it to Cubase (which I already own), but decided to go with Stylus RMX instead because I already have tons of synths/sounds, I can load it as a VST, and I really liked the Stylus interface and workflow. If you could record audio to Reason, then it would be a contender for my main music application.

My impression after researching Reason was that you could use it for just about any style of music, but it seems marketed towards the electronica crowd.

You might consider buying something like Cakewalk Home Studio (less $$) and using Reason with that.

Good luck!

You can do most anything in reason.

I use reason rewrire'd into protools. I often do my drum sequences with reason, along with any synth/sample work.

If you are looking to record audio, Reason is *NOT* what you want. If you are looking for a sequencer/synth/sampler stuff. Reason may be what you want.

IIRC, they have a 30 day demo avail, or at least, they used to!

There is still a Reason demo available at http://www.propellerheads.se/ . Reason 4 comes out next week so I wouldn't make any purchases just yet. Also, for the same price as Reason, you might want to take a look at Logic Studio. Logic does require a Mac though.

Reason is a really cool program for people who like to experiment with sounds and sound synthesis. Kind of like those who enjoyed messing around with the hardware synths from back in the day. That's not to say that others wouldn't like it or find it useful, but for all its power and versatility, it's fairly specialized.

Of course, that's my impression

I have played with Reason a little and loved it a lot!

I do 99% of my personal composing using Sonar and it's built-in tools (synths, drums, etc...)

But I have rewired Reason into Sonar a few times and ended up doing 99% of what I would have been doing in Sonar's synth world, in Reason's world instead.

Everything in Reason is killer and even though the tools behave a little differently and you have to re-adjust your design process when using it, ultimately it's really great.

Question Tascam Giga Solo 3.0?

I just upgraded to the latest Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio XL. I think that'll do and I'm going to investigate some playback samplers.

Anyone with Tascam Giga 3.0?
