Quick basic question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys and gals,
Me and a buddy are starting a project, just guitar and bass (probably get a drum machine) and are planning on playing more progish funk, kinda just some RHCP stuff. Anyway, he got a sweet deal on 2 Shure SM57's for like $120 and we want to try recording some stuff, just getting some ideas down, get started. We just wanted to know though, what a good low budget solution for two simultaneous xlr inputs into a pc would be.

Thanks for any help!

Get a small 4 channel mixer, and you're good to go.

a 4 channel mixer will amp the mics, but won't do much for getting it into the computer!

you need an audio interface, thats the bit that gets the audio into the computer, and you need one with 2 mic amps, thats where you plug the mic into (mics have such a small signal they need almost always need an amp, normally called a mic preamp, or pre).

at a budget level they are all very similar, and have a similar level of quality, just make sure that the one you get has 2 mic pre's. you will also need a program to record TOO, a lot of interfaces come with a free version of a recording program, stripped down but normall very useable!

there are so many options it silly to suggest one, all the programs do essentially the same thing and most cheap interfaces will do the job!
