Wondering if anyone here can recommend or comment on any external USB hard-drives, I'm looking for something anywhere between 160-300 GIG. What brands are good and what should be avoided (and of course,I'm avoiding Sony like the plague).

If you like the internal drives, the external will be the same thing just in a case for carry.
It's sure amazing how cheap 160-240gig drives have gotten! |

| | | | Most all of them are good. I have built many computers over the years and have had problems with only one brand and will not use them again. The Maxtor drives I would stay away from.

Personally I'd rather go with an external housing as opposed to an external drive. That gives me the options of swapping the drive out for a different one later should I have problems, want to upgrade, need to drop it in one of my computers for some reason, etc.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Sep 2000 Location: beverly mass USA | | | i was running an external hd with my firepod/desktop setup. it was a wd in a comp usa usb/firewire external box. i even put a seagate 160gb barracuda in it. even tried another usb only enclosure.
i started running into delayed write failures all the`time. i decided to use one of my internal twin 160 seagate barracudas instead. no more problems.
i hate maxtors, they are arrogant , their hd's stink, ive got a couple of dead ones here and `will never buy another at any price.the info loss is very disturbing.
for the record, the external worked well for a while, it was a western digital.
when i record outside w/ laptop, i havent tried an external hd yet, basically cause my laptop has a 80g hd and i been recording rec out on pa. |

Seagate's looking like the clear winner here, and Western Digital; ain't ahlf-bad either.
Don't worry, I'm avoiding Maxtor's like the plague!

It also depends what recording system your running. Pro tools hates certain types of hard drives so check at the recording program's website first. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
