Recording a choir

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some ideas here.

I got a rock band covered in my studio, but landed a church gig for recording the choir.
Medium size hall, stage, 8 inputs at my disposal.
The hardware is not an issue, I am looking for suggestions on mic placement.
I am familiar with the decca tree, never practiced it.
Any suggestions?
Mics available:
2 AKG C1000
1 Rhode NT1
1 Studio Projects C3
4 Shure SM57
6 Shure SM58

Got sent this article a while ago. Does say much about mic placement though.

Perhaps try a binaural mic right in the center of the church or hall or a pair of mikes at 30 degrees off axis. The further back you place the mic, the more room ambience you will hear. If their performance is good, you'll get a good recording with lots of natural reverb. If you have a soloist, you'll probably need to close mike them to get some control of the mix. That may not work well if you have a live audience for obvious reasons. Another thing to try would be hanging two condensors from the ceiling 15 ft apart over the stage or choir stand. I've seen that done.
