Recording Didgeridoo- mic/setup advice request

Sign in to disble this ad
so- turns out a friend of mine has a few didgeridoos- which id like to record- but i have a couple questions.

im recording on an m-audio fw1814 into pro tools m-powered. thus far i have been recording direct- but i need to get a couple mics- and was thinking an sm58 plus one other mic would be a good start. and- so far- that one other mic needs to be good with a didgeridoo- and if it could do a great job of mic'ing my bass cab- thatd be great (eden 410xlt).

i would imagine a didgeridoo moves a lot of air- so mic techniques or any general advice would be most appreciated- as i dont have a whole lot of mic experience.

thanks.

SM58's are just OK.
58 Betas are pretty much the industry standard for live vocal mics.

But if you're gonna record, it's probably time to start looking at some condensers.

For a didgeridoo, I would think you would want to think about using condensers. I would aim one toward the lower end for beef, and one toward the upper end for playing sounds, from a couple of feet away to start, and mix judiciously. I've never recorded didgeridoo, but this would seem like a reasonable approach.

Specific mics? Shure SM81's or any of the Shure KSM instrument condensers would be a good place to start.

If budget is an issue, I have found the M-Audio condensers to be an extremely good value. I have two M-Audio Solaris mics that work quite well for a variety of applications. As far as dynamic mics go, start with a Shure Beta 57A. They're a bit more versatile than the 58 types.

+1 on the condensers suggestion.

There are a lot of overtones in a didgeridoo that would probably be picked up better with a condenser.
