Recording Playback Stuttering

Sign in to disble this ad
I dont have any fancy recording setup or anything, so I hope this is the right forum.

I'm having an issue when recording into my computer.. I'll plug my bass into the line-in and record something into Sound Forge. But, on playback, the recording will stutter every couple seconds or so.. I cant figure out whats causing it. I've made sure the drivers are all updated. It does it with all programs though.. Not just Sound Forge.

Any ideas??

I use an inexpensive M-Audio interface. I have tried line-in before and it has never worked for me.

Sounds like its a latency issue somewhere along the line.

Are you just plugging into the line in on a generic PC soundcard?

If your audio is built into your motherboard you might want to see if there is a bios update.

Check your RAM - maybe a stick is dead?
Check your hard drive swap settings - maybe they're too high/low.
Are you using Windows? Which flavor? There are known problems with this in Vista. If not Vista, maybe it's time to reinstall?

used memtest86 on the RAM.. No errors... I believe the HD swap settings are on automatic. Ive never messed with them really..

WinXP Pro. I've reinstalled several times and the problem is still there.

I thinks it's time you rifled through the settings you have set in Soundforge. Start there, also recheck your settings to your input on your sound card, does it use a 3rd party application to change settings? or does it use the native windows "sound mixer"?

Have you recently installed any new apps or devices somewhere in the time frame when this started happening? If you have "system restore", you could try that, If you know exactly or approx. when this issue arose, that is also provided that you have system restore enabled, and if it successfully works (Sometimes it don't).

Well, that's at least somewhere to start, Before you would take the "quick fix", like getting an external device

Well, I'm going to try to reinstall Audacity or something later tonight to double check to make sure its not just Sound Forge.. I could've sworn it happens with all programs, but I may be wrong..

If it is SF, then I'll just use Audacity.. SF can be a big pain and resource hog for things which seem like simple tasks.

Just a guess, but a low RPM (5400) hard drive could cause audio issues. A very common cost cutting method in mass produced computers.

Maybe cleaning up your hard drive and defraging will do the trick.

My random stab in the dark.

Check the latency of whatever interface you're using. It may be set too low.
