I play with an SVP-BSP preamp > Carver 1000W mono power amp. The power amp has been surgically "altered" so that it pushes 1000W @ 4OHMs out of one channel. Since it has only one channel, I use my clean/dirty mix "out" to go into the power amp.
Now that my band has decided to get "serious" (whatever that means) and record our originals, we've cracked open the piggy bank and we're paying an engineer to record us. Usually, I play live gigs with a Carvin RedEye 4x10 cabinet daisy-chained into a Behringer 1x15 cabinet. Both are 8ohms, but when daisy-chained it lowers them down to 4Ohms, which is perfect for my power amp. When I practice I usually play through a little carvin 350 proseries combo with a 15". I really like that amp, but I want to record with my Ampeg. So I have a couple of questions:
1) This is really for you Ampeg experts out there. Since I'm using the clean/dirty mix line out to feed my poweramp, can I still use the balanced line out's of my clean and dirty channels to essentially have a line out for both my "clean" channel and my "dirty" channel? Ideally I want to mike my cabinets and run a line out from my preamp. Is this possible? Does running line-outs from those channels interfere with the line out hooking into my poweramp?
2) Should I use both my cabinets? We're playing in a two car garage. Is this just too much sound for that room? If I have to decide on a cabinet, which cabinet should I run?
I would appreciate any input from people that run a pre/power setup that have recorded with them, or from any of you recording geeks out there. Thanks in advance.
