Recording Problems?

I recently purchased the Scarlett 2i2 along with Ableton Live 8, and as far as the interface goes, its flawless. But i'm having problems with Ableton.. It freezes and crashes constantly.. I'm using an Acer Aspire laptop with these specs.
-Amd phenom II x2 n660 3.0 Ghz processor
-4 gb ddr3
- 320 gig HDD
Anything I could do to enhance the performance besides upgrading laptops? Any help would be great, thanks.

Ableton has great support. What did they say?

Obvious things, turn off all extra crab. Anti Virus, any Notifiers, auto updates, CPU monitors,

Bring up MSCONFIG and turn off stuff you don't need. It's a lot of trial and error, and there are many sites that have helpful hints on what not to run.

The only things running are the bare necessities, and it still acts like its running with only a gig of ram maybe.. Haven't contacted Ableton yet, but went to a music store and they mentioned something about getting an external harddrive?I'll just have to call em.

Ok here is the deal. You do have a powerful laptop on your hands with plenty of juice to run anything. However, experience tells me you have not customise it for a D.A.W. and that is critical.I need more info such as Operating system is concern to help you proceed.

Nothing that exciting. Following a guide like this: Optimize Your PC For Music Production

Should get you going in the right direction.

I frequently record 20 channels simultaneously at my church with a PC running SONAR 8. I don't experience drop outs or anything of the sort, and the PC is nothing spectacular. 4 gigs of RAM, 2 200-ish gig hard drives and a 1.5TB external drive. Win XP.
