Recording question regaurding guitars.

I'm usually a bassist in a band, but last month I bought a 6 string electric (Yes, I have sinned) because I always had so much fun borrowing my friend/rhythm guitarist back up guitar. The month before that I bought a Line 6 UX1 interface and I have been doing some song writing.

The question is:

1. When recording guitars (Lead and Rhythm), should I use the same tone setting or should I tweak it or even use a different amp?

The real answer is: whatever sounds good to you.

Since that doesn't help much, let me say this. I usually use the same amp or amp model for both, but adjust the settings some. Generally, for solos/lead I use a little more midrange, more reverb, and a little less gain, but it really depends on the song and the genre.

I have a tendency to mix things up, for rhythm I generally record guitar parts direct and then come back and apply amp models and effects as desired. For lead I record them with the effects and amp sound I want, that way I can work the other sounds in to fit.

Head over to this forum:

They discuss both expensive and free plugins for guitars
It's a big help to record and listen with one light plugin, but record clean. The rerun the clean track through several different modeling settings to get it just right.
You can add extra crunch or take it out at different points of a song or solo.
