recording software with real time and / or added effects?

is there any recording software out there that allows you to hook your instrument up to your computer and have effects like fuzz, chorus, etc added to your sound in real time?

also, can effects like those be added to your sound after your instrument is recorded?

All DAWs to this that I can think of.
What computer?
How much do you want to spend?
Reaper is a bargain and comes with some useful plugs. Google Free VST for even more.

You should always split the bass and record one track dry, so you can add effects, eq, compression, ... during the mix when you're not playing.
