Recording TESTS of varied preamps with BASS :::Continuous UPDATE:::

Sign in to disble this ad
Hallo everybody...
During two months I have recorded many samples of varied preamplifiers to compare them... Now I would like to share my samples with you.

Preamps currently in test (order by add):
• BEHRINGER - MIC100 TUBE ULTRAGAIN (class: uni/tube/DIBOX)
• TECH 21 - SANS AMP™ PARA DRIVER DI (class: uni/DIBOX/distortion)
• PEAVEY - MAX® BASS PREAMP (class: bass/tube/ss)
• SOUNDCRAFT - SPIRITM M12 (class: mixpre)
• ART - MPA GOLD (class: uni/lampa)
• AMPEG SVT-CL (class: bass amp/tube) THX to Kobez
• AGUILAR DB 680 (class: bass/tube) THX to Kobez
• EBS VALVE DRIVE (class: bass/tube/distortion) THX to Kobez

I would like add another preamps, so if you are interestet in, stay tuned
MXR M-80 (coming soon) THX to Kobez

MAIN RULES:
For all samples I used (and will use) same conditions to reach best results.
One bass - Jazz Bass Marcus Miller Signature (made in japan) - passive mode
One set of strings - S.I.T. Power Wound Nickel .045 - very old and not anymore changing the sound
EQ - No EQ - I tweak every preamp to "ZERO POSITION" !!!

Here is the link to my websides witch are dedicated to MUSIC of course. Please, don't be confused that it is not in english. Just scroll down and listen to the samples. You can add your thoughts also to shout box below the players on ym webside. Thank you.
Everything important about testing rules etc. I can (and I will) write here.

Use the flash players directly on my webside or click on "download ZDE" link below players for downloading all samples

EBS Valvedrive by FAAAR for me, but that's mainly because it sounds most like my tube Bmax-T that I prefer.

stlbfn: Hmm, Valve Drive provides nice FAT but "treble-covered" sound. I think this box can't be used like only one pre because it has not enough of natural gain. I had to incresed level of gain +25dB maualy in CUBASE. So this thing is more Distortion than Pre.

Just stating which I prefer.

Others sounded much to thin to me, but I like the meaty bass sounds.

Soundcraft/Spirit m12 - that one sounds good just using the 2 pick ups, I don't like what I hear for the others

The EBS Valve Drive has a much more full tone (hence why I own one)

I'm kinda suprised how vastly different a lot of these sound and how the EBS tone is more consistent with each style.

stflbn: OK I understand and thank you for your replies. The THINNER sound is I think because of my JB Marcus Miller neck witch is thinner and made of maple . But I am satisfied with MPA Gold and Para Driver (fantastic flexibility).
I forgot mention the main thing - I let all cerrections on ZERO etc... I have to add this information to first post soon.

stranger0: I think the SansAmp Para DI is consistent also becasuse I can very easily tweak trebles more down and it sounds very similar to me...

Yeah, I think it provides quiet good tube sound, crisp but soft highs and you can try input impendance and plate voltage... A lot of setup. I think I will use this to record my demos. For playing alive I'll take my SansAmp Para DI.
