Recording without the GROWL on low F note

Trying to record bass in Pro tools LE8, PC. Using a Ric 4001. Either DI with Focusrite 220 or Trace Elliot cab and head. I'm getting a lot of growl on the low F note.Mics, I've used Beta 57 a,57, and Beyer M 88 TG. Cannot find out why. Using all types of plug ins. Any suggestions?

The "growl" on the low F note is evident only on a recorded track, or on the input signal as well?
