At least an audigy by creative labs (give you 2 inputs) - that would permit simultaneous recording of 2 instruments.

If you want more, there are products by m-audio and others that offer up to 8 in/out and more... price goes up accordingly and computer system requirement increase as well.

How many channels do you need to record at the same time?
(An easy minimum tally is 4 channel for drums [kick, snare, overhead left and right]
1 per bass
1 per guiitar
2 per keyboard
etc)

multi-track IO devices...

Here are a few examples of one part of the equasion - the Multitrack IO device...
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_u...1814-main.html
http://www.bizrate.com/buy/noncat_pr...-24781626.html

What software do you plan to use? Pro Tools? Sonar? Cubase? Logic? Reason?

I use Sonar and I dabble in Reason - but I understand how to get around sequencer software like that pretty readily.

PS - I am not necessarily endorsing any of these examples of IO devices. I have used the Firewire 410 with reasonable success. But as far as these go, I only know this is the TYPE of device you need.

I have a totally PERSONAL set up - just software and a simple sound card.
