Hi, I have a question regarding recorded bass drum sounds. One of my bands recorded last month and the results were disappointing for a variety of reasons but one of the things that struck me was how bad the bass drum sounded. You can hear the results here, they're the first four tunes: https://www.facebook.com/slidingside...app_2405167945
(I'm not just fishing for plays/likes here, these are IMO pretty bad recordings and I'm mostly embarrassed by them)
The bass drum is obviously much too loud, but more than that I hate the tone. It sounds like two pieces of plastic slapping together...all attack and no thud.
Anyway I started listening more for bass drum sounds in recordings. I noticed a similar (bad) tone on many Van Halen tracks on my Best of Both Worlds double CD. However because there is so much sound going on (loud guitars and vocals plus synths) it seems to work a bit better. I guess this type of tone cuts better?
Good sounding bass drums that I like would be basically every track on Synchronicity or Steady, As She Goes. I got Ah Via Musicom recently and was disappointed to hear the plasticky bass drum sound on every track, I think it really detracts from the tunes.
Does anybody else feel the same as I do? Do people actually like the bass drum sound that I find so grating? I think it sounds terrible. The reason I ask is because the engineer on our session is a drummer and he seemed to love the drum sound. I'm not crazy about his snare either but that's another story.
