Sucky boombox monitors

Im looking to add my second set of monitors. I really dont feel like spending $500 on ns-10s just becuase they are the industry standard for lo-fi monitors. Im half thinking about just getting a bad pair of bookshelf speakers from best buy, which is what ns10's are supposed to emulate anyway. A pair of avantones or auratones are on the list also. I dont know that i need or want something thats made for recording, just something so I can check lowest common denominator on. My main monitors are Events asp8's. Anyone have any suggestions on "bad" sounding monitors.

Radio shack sells these 8" tall bookshelf speakers that are cheap, and are pretty nasty sounding but in a good way. Half decent speakers but not hi end. they used to be made out of metal, I have one that's about 20 years old and it's great.

I don't think I would call ns-10s low-fi. I own a set along with "good" monitors, cheap Radio Shack book shelves, and Auratones.

The beauty in the ns-10s is the way mixes transfer to other sound systems. If I can get is sounding good on the ns-10s, and the "good" monitors I am golden.

If you are looking for the lowest common denominator the Auratones are the way to go. I have tried a bunch of consumer book shelves and they all seem to cause more problems than anything.
