Surprising quality from a toy

I've been spending the morning doinking around with my rig, and screeched out a few riffs I wanted to take note of. I don't have the stuff I need to run direct into my computer, but my kids just got Rock Band from santa. I figured the mic might work for some cheap recordings for the sake of taking notes.

It actually has a good sound to it. It's a bit boomy, but easily fixed with the feeble EQ in windows media player. It's very directional, so you get a fairly clean recording, even with the kids "bombing the fortress" in the living room. It doesn't need a driver to work on XP SP2, and I was just using the windows standard Sound Recorder from the Accessories> Entertainment folder. That sucks because of the 60 second limitation, but it does a decent recording at the standard setting of PCM 44.1 kHz-- 16 bit-- stereo.

Just wondering if anyone has run across any other surprises with out of the ordinary equipment.

Haven't tried that, but I do like Rock Band, especially the drums.

My roommate used his "Eye Toy" Camera, from his PS2, on his computer. The Eye Toy camera is made by logitech, and has a built-in microphone. It tracked well, and had decent sound. The only problem was the obnoxious blue LED staring you in the face.

Funny you just posted this. I used the microphone last night to record the vocals into a song that we are writing. I just wanted to get the idea on the computer so that we could do the real thing later and I was pretty surprised. Both Audacity and MixCraft saw it and it worked perfectly. Windows sees it as a logitech sound device. As for sound quality, it is good enough for vocals.
