Toneport + real amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys

I need to figure out whether to buy the toneport gx or spend extra dough on its bigger brother, the ux1. My question is:
Is it possible for me to run my bass into the preamp of my regular amp, and then into the toneport? Im worried that I wont like the 5 software amps included in the package, you see.
Also, if that is possible, can I run it directly into the "instrument input" jack of the gx, or will it only work if I run it into the "stereo input" that only the ux1 has in the back?

I haven't looked at the toneports your talking about, but I can help you a little. If you run your bass through your amp's preamp, you'd ideally want to run it into a line level input on the interface. You'd be using your amp's preamp to color your tone, so a line input would just be that tone straight into your comp. By plugging into an instrument input, your going through the interface's preamp. So even though you wouldn't be using any software amp modeling, the preamp in the interface would be coloring your tone further. As to whether or not a line signal from your amp's preamp would be too much signal and would clip the instrument input, I have no idea.

I believe this to be correct, but please, ANYONE correct me if I said anything that's wrong.

The other thing to bear in mind if you do this is you will get the sound of your preamp but not the speakers, so it may not sound the same as you're used to hearing from your amp. I wonder if the Line6 software allows you to bypass the amp modelling but use the speaker modelling?

I can do this with my behringer v-amp and korg pandora, using my LMII head into either device and just use the cab models. Sounds pretty authentic and close to 'my' sound.

One of the things to consider with the Toneport is that you are not limited to the five bass amp options. There are also a number of mixer board options or no preamp/mixer setting. This is what I do for bass, not use the bass amp models but go "direct in to the board" that way I have a fairly uncolored sound and can run out of an amp or pedal board (or mic or whatever) and still retain my original sound.
