Too much bass in PC recordings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I only want to record basslines so that I can play guitar over them. So I have the most ridiculous setup: Am using Audacity to record with my headset mic placed in front of my speaker cab.

Now, this is fine, I'm not looking for great quality, but I keep getting too much bass for my speakers to handle. When I use headphones, the sound is fine. I went and bought better speakers today but still get the same problem.

Do I have to buy even better speakers or is there some ridiculously simple way to fix this?

Turn down the live mic volume on the computer - even better use headphones instead of speakers (you'd need them to mix it anyway...stuff mixed through computer speakers always sounds far too bassy anywhere else)

there might be an issue with proximity effect on the mic as well. you're better off getting a better mic or running DI (i dont like it, but it works).

how far is the mic from the cab?

try to cut subsonic frequencies, as they arent really important, especially for what you're doing. start around 40-50hz and keep going up until the boomy bass goes away.

a lot of times these small speakers have an EQ built in to compensate for being tiny. this coupled with unprocessed bass can be a mess.
