What causes bleed through?

While listening to some of the isolated bass tracks of old, I noticed that you can very, very faintly hear what song they were playing along to. Why is that? It it because of their condenser mics picking up the song through their headphones or something?

Probably cross talk between tracks on the original tape. Could be poor isolation during recording. It could be the headphones. THere's any number of reasons.

+1 And most people had crappy car radios and home stereos so back then those tiny imperfections wouldn't have been a noticed also studio time was expensive and sometimes if you got a great take whatever you picked up along the way just stayed I remember hearing a few Beatles tracks where people are talking in the background but when the song was blasting thru your little portable RCA radio you would never hear it.
