What does a sequencer do?

I'm starting to get into the world of analog synths and there's a lot of a equipment to learn about. So to start with, could someone tell me what a sequencer is, how it is used and what it is used for? I kind of have an idea, but I don't really KNOW, ya know?

Simply, it plays a sequence of notes, usually in a loop. Think of it as a drum machine for notes.

I've seen demos of loop sequencers for iPod and Nintendo DS that also would take up hours of my time.

Yeah, i've been GASing for a Yamaha QY700 sequencer for YEARS after the first time i heard Atom and His Package in the late 90's.

Sequencers are awesome. There are some cheapy online sequencers you can mess around with. Just do a google search for, like, "free online music sequencer".
