What is a popular preamp for recording modern hard rock/ prog/ metal bass?

clean tone only by the way

sansamp, ampeg svp. those are the only ones ive used for dirty tones. i actually use the ampeg for everything. you can dial in a solid clean tone with it too. thats the great thing about tubes, the more you dig in, the crunchier it gets. -joep

I like the sound I get from the Sans Amp DI. The last recording I completed, the engineer added an Ampeg SVT patch in post-production, adding a little gain. I was very happy with the outcome.
