i didn't know where to post this but...

would it be possible to convert a clip on microphone into a wireless pack by changing the cable on the transmitter or would it lose sound quality?

Are you asking about taking an existing clip on lav mic that has a traditional XLR connection on it and then using it with a wireless system instead?

What Mic do you have and what wireless system do you have? With some soldering and a new connector, it may work.

The only thing I could think of is an impedance issue. Microphones have a different impedance than a standard quart inch jack. Give us pictures of the actual products and we might have a better idea.

i dont have a wireless system yet but i was thinking of getting one because there are loads of them going cheap on ebay (a lot cheaper than bass/guitar wireless systems). It's a lapel mic and the microphone plugs into the transmitter with what i think is a 3.5mm jack.

IF you were giong to get it for guitar id say itd be worth a shot. If its for bass id say your better off saving your money. I looked a few years ago and most wireless systems dont work with basses. Some like the xwire and a few of the higher end shures are alright but just getting a cheap one off ebay is gonna be dissapointing in the low end i think.

3.5mm jack? Sound like a Sennheiser. The EW100G2 sereies has a feature in the trnsmitter programming that will allow you to adjust the sensitivty (sp?) to whatever input you may be using. You can buy different input cable including a 1/4" instrument cable that will fit that pack. Other systems may or may not have the ability to adjust the gain on the transmitter. The down side to using most wireless systems with a bass is the lack of low end frequency response. Most will cut off around 40hz or higher. My primary wireless is a shure ULX series, because it actually spec'd out to a much better lowpass frequency that would reach the fundamental low b note of a five string bass. Is this important? I run a 2x18 + 4x10X bag end system that can produce these notes so yes. I also run a system that uses a 2x10X or 6x10X that uses a wireless system (sennhieser) that doesn't go that low so it's not so critical in that situation.

So are you trying to mic an acoustic bass with a lav mic? Maybe I am not following, but if you are using an electric bass with a wireless system, you do not need a mic, you need a 1/4" cable to the wireless system's body pack connector, and that connector will vary with the brand of wireless that you get. I have used the X2 digital wireless system with my bass. It works very well. It does not "squash" the sound and catches the low B just fine.

its an electric bass and i was wondering if i could unplug the microphone from the transmitter and plug my bass in instead. I think i could plug it in but i was wondering if it would lose too much quality to be worth it.

If you have the proper receiver for the transmitter it would be worth a shot. Most of the brands that I am aware of use a single body pack, and you can connect any of that particular brands mics with the proper connector into the body pack, as well as a 1/4 from a bass/guitar to the same body pack.

Many Shure units use the same transmitter for lavalier mics and instruments so, yes, it would just be a matter of getting the proper cable for the instrument to the transmitter.
