Would like to get started, not sure what to buy

When it comes to recording, and recording equipment, I dont know a single thing, but Talkbass has helped me with plenty of this kind of stuff before so I figured here would be a great place to ask.

Im looking to record bass, acoustic guitar and maybe vocals. Can anyone recommend any DIs, mics and recording interfaces or mixers?

Im sorry if this is too broad of a question, but I am not really sure what to ask. If someone could tell me what to specify I would be more than happy to do so.

Thanks,
Sam.

I use an Alesis MultiMix USB mixer and an Audio-Technica condenser mic. Nothing too expensive, the mixer was about $150 and the mic $100.

I got some pretty good quality from it, if you want to hear a sample with no eq or anything, then go to my music page and listen to "a patient satisfaction"

So would I be able to use a single mic for vocals, acoustic guitar and vocals? (not at the same time of course)

I'm actually very interested in this subject as well. I've been playing for 20 years, and I 've recorded sessions where the engineer used Protools, but I've never ran the boards and have no clue where to start. I think that one thing the OP and I are asking is "what's the simplest way to get bass, vocals, guitar, (and in my case a drum machine) onto some formatted medium where we can play it back and hear it for ourselves." Indeed it is a broad question, but the starting point is what I believe we're after.

Hey Funkalicious101 and PDaddy-Probably the simplest and cheapest way right now, IMHO, that I know of is, to invest in the H2 Handy Recorder -$195.00....set it in the middle of Drums, Bass amp, vocal speaker cabs(or voice),and Guitar amp-and you can listen back immediately to yourself in 4-channel brilliant sound if you can plug into a surround sound system (stereo input)-other wise just plug into a pair of active monitors and hear what you sound like. Now that I've figured out (and I'm about the most computer blunted person alive) how to download the recordings to my computer, its simple to burn a CD anytime for anyone you want to give one to... Pretty cool,huh...Peace...DAcat

I got started with a Lexicon USB interface (includes Cubase LE recording/sequencing software) and got some decent results to get my feet wet. If you have a firewire connection on your computer, I recommend using a firewire interface becuase it can handle more data than a USB 2.0 connection. There are so many options for any budget, it's hard to recommend something specific. Do your research and make an informed choice based on your needs.

For anyone getting started, I highly recommend reading the "Guide" at www.tweakheadz.com.

Ditto! Check out this site before you start your search. I highly recommend it. I'm getting ready put together a modest system. Am using laptop - definitely leaning toward firewire interface. MWilson
