XLR to USB Cable - Decent Quality?

Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro and I don't want to shell out for the Apogee Jam. Has anyone recorded using an XLR-to-USB cable (such as Art's XConnect) and if so did you get decent quality? My bass has active electronics plus I have the Tech21 SansAmp.

I get decent quality going through my SansAmp and into the 1/8" input jack (using a converter), but then I can't plug headphones in since the 13" MacBook Pro has only one input/output.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I was about to suggest an M Audio Fastrack but they're up to $80. I paid $40 a few years ago.

I've never used one but wouldn't a 1/4" to USB be more versatile? In case you don't have your Sansamp you would still be able to go straight from your bass.
