Your favourite VST compressor for bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I used to use Waves V-comp and Kjaerhus Audio GAC1, but recently I have discovered a Major Tom by Stillwell Audio.

http://www.stillwellaudio.com/?page_id=13

It's behaviour is modeled after the dbx 160.. Liking is very much, so far.

What is your favourite VST compressor for bass to use in DAW?

All the stillwell stuff is excellent. I tried the Rocket, and ended up buying all the plugs. They hold their own against any plugin, and put a lot of hardware to shame. Check out the 1973 eq for electric bass...yum!

No, I don't work for Stillwell...I'm a recording engineer/producer geek by day, and a p-bass loving freak when the sessions are over

Thanks for head up for the Rocket - this is a new one! I will try it in action later.

I have just tried also the 1973 eq -you are right, very sweet sounding!

Cool! The Rocket can do the classic 1176 type rock-n-roll squash, and a whole lot more. Play around with the parallel comp, decadence & impetus features... big audio fun!

I've been on a marathon mixing binge the past week. I have to get two last minute album productions mixed/edited/final overdubs/mastered before I get on a plane in four days...and the Stillwell plugs have at least added a bunch of fun and pleasant surprises to the seemingly endless work at hand.... when I get to Chicago, I'm gonna buy a bass and spend a week practicing!

Personaly , I use the UAD-1 's LA-3A all the time on bass. The LA-2A or 1176 are very good also.

( also available as VST )

Rbass is a bass enhancer, not a compressor in the traditional sense. Very useful at times, though.

The modern VST plugs by Antress... and they're free... free.

I like Blockfish:

And the Classic Compressor from Kjaerhus Audio (part of an excellent suite of plugins):

Both are free!

Personally I like the Intelligent Maximizer and/or the Multiband Dynamics options available in Izotope's Ozone 3.

Waves Renaissance Compressor. I'd use it before I'd use a lot of outboard compressors on the market. However, I haven't tried a lot of the newer ones you guys are mentioning. I tend to find something that works and stick rigidly with it.

I usually use either the Waves SSL Channel strip or the URS Classic Console Strip Pro--both are killer. The URS strip is crazy flexible. The Waves SSL sounds darn close to the real deal. Love them both.
But the URS is serious bang for buck given it's versatility.

Gonna look into these Stillwell pluggies too . . . .

Waves Ren. Comp for sure. Simple. Transparent.

PSP Vintage Warmer for some color.
