Rabbath Book 2 Question

HeyThe first exercise in Book 2 of Rabbath's New Technique starts with an Eb triad arpeggio in Rabbath's third position. The Bb on the D string goes to Eb on the G string and both are played with the index finger. Do you move your finger to each string to play this or barre the Eb and Bb with a flattened finger?

Thanks.

Rabbath does a lot of barring, and I would think in a big slur like this one a bar would be appropriate.

The instructions at the top of the page for this exercise indicate that one should play all these studies in 3rd position while keeping the thumb at the base of the neck. It is not a thumb position exercise.

It is my understanding that Rabbath uses an "X" to indicate thumb position.

Rabbath has a good intro to this book as well where he writes about how his fingering are suggestions and he encourages experimentation.

I don't think the op mentioned the thumb?

Anyways, I've been barring the Bb to Eb with the first finger.

Thanks for your help. I did not consider barring with the thumb, but rather the first finger. The marking says to play both the Eb and Bb with 1. The flattened first finger, although a bit uncomfortable for me, seems like a better way to play the passage with speed.

Oh, sorry, I misread your post. I would do some barring with the first finger as well. I still have much work to do in that book. Its a great book. My instructor got me going, almost from the beginning of using this book, on Etude 15.
