Solo tuning requires buying a set of special "solo tuning strings" made to be tuned up a full step. G to A. D to E, A to B, and E to F#....Most solo classical bassists use this tuning to get that tight, cello-like sound and response. People like Gary Karr and Edgar Meyer use this tuning alot.
Some jazz players use solo strings and tune them down to regular EADG for ease of playing and looser response.
These strings are much thinner in terms of gauge.
