Wink Minutemen Video releases

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Mike,
I remember in the day, that SST was going to release a Minutemen video. Years later all I was able to find was a Flipside video with the Minutemen and Minor Threat. It is a great, but I want more!

Also, wanted to know if you recall your rig when you played "Ice Machine" among my favorite Minutemen tracks. I love the tone of your bass on that one.

Thanks for all the great music you've made over the years.

Cheers,
Ken

Re: Minutemen Video releases

hi,

sst released something called "the tour" on video w/minutemen, meat puppets, husker du, sacharrine trust and swa but that's no longer available. the video collection you're talking about, "corndogs" never came out unfortunately. that's all I know of. there were four promo videos made for sst for the minutemen, "this ain't no picnic," "ain't talkin' 'bout love," "king of the hill" and "ack ack ack ack."

I think you're talking about the minutemen song "cut" off of "buzz or howl..." - I went direct into the board w/an early 70s fender p-bass (bought from fear's derf scratch). it had dimarzio pickups. I played w/a pick, by the way.

thank you for the kind words.

Thanks!

Thanks, Mike. I'll have to hunt for a copy.

I actually used to request the video for "This ain't no picnic" at the 9:30 Club all the time in the 80's. I missed one of your Minutemen shows in '85 and I still sad about it. I did however, get to see you twice, once with firehose and again later with DOS with Thurston Moore years later in Boston.

By the way, what's George Hurley up to these days? Do you guys ever play together or plan to tour together again?

I also missed the Minutemen (at Buff State in Buffalo NY) in '85, I think my parents made me go on vacation with them or something lame like that. But I have repented by going to at least 15 Watt solo/fIREHOSE gigs since. Yeah, as Watt says, there's this video "The Tour" which I have seen - its excellent! Its outta print, but you may be able to find someone with a copy, my friend used to have one but I don't know what happened to it. Its so great to see those guys playing live, and to see D Boon wailing...

I believe there was a part in there where the mmen are playing "Lost on the Freeway" and the Kirkwoods start running on the stage doing all sorts of shenanigans. That woulda been a hell of a show to catch - 4 of my favorite bands together...

Watt have you checked out the book "This Band Could be Your Life" yet?

btw: Mike, much respect to you. Punk rock changed my life.

Old thread!

There's a boatload of videos and other goodies at http://www.corndogs.org, including most of that corndogs video, albeit in pretty rough shape. Very, very worth checking out.

I just want to add: Mr Watt, thank you! You (Double Nickels on the Dime, specifically) are the reason I play the bass, and you continue to be a huge inspiration. I've been waiting more than a year to come up with an intelligent question just so I could post in your forum. But what do you say to your hero?? So, thank you.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I guess I'll have to start asking all the non-intelligent questions I've come up with, heheh.

Hah, that's what I'm like. I'm like, Oh man, we got Mike Watt over here! But uhhh... I can't think of anything to ask him. So I usually just stop by here to see what the man has to say. Thanks again Watt for sharing your wisdom with you're bass playing fans.

Re: Old thread!

leanne (and everyone else),

don't worry, you ask your questions when they come to you. I'm happy to try and help out where I can. like john coltrane said, "music is a big reservoir" and we can all get wet w/it.

thank you all very much for the quite nice comments and everyone have a great 2003 w/the bass in your hands!

There's a dude on Ebay selling copies of an old SST vid with fIREHOSE, Minutemen, Black Flag, etc. Just get on Ebay.com, and search Minutemen, you'll see.

hi,

I wish people would freely trade rather than sell this stuff, oh well...

That's what I love about my punker friend Larry (no, not sum 41 punk... the other kind ) He's always trying to get people into his music, he's gotten me into a few awesome bands including the minutemen. And if you are a trustworth upstanding citizen such as myself, he'll let you borrow almost any of his albums for a long time. And I totally agree with you about the freely trade vs. selling thing because it's more for the fans. I mean, any joe shmoe could pick up a black flag tape cheap at a yardsale and sell it on Ebay expensive for a Blag Flag fan. Eh, what can ya do?

hi,

yes, I have. actually, the title is "our band could be your life" and it's by michael azerrad - the title comes from a line in a song I wrote in the minutemen called "history lesson, part two" of of the "double nickels on the dime" album. he was very nice to do that and it was happening for him to write about a time that's been kind of ignored (you know, conventional wisdom has punk rock going from sex pistols to nirvana w/nothing in between!).

here's a link for it on amazon.com:

I bought it as soon as it came out...killer book.
The Minutemen, Replacements and Husker Du chapters are great, but the Butthole Surfers bit is incredible...truly one of the funniest things I've read.
Now if I could only get it back...damn.

hi,

they're one funny band too (the b.h. surfers). their first hollywood gig was w/the minutemen - way back when - the big boys were on the bill too at a place called the grandia room (it got made over kind of new wave and is called the martini lounge now).
