1st build a five

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm gonna try and build my 1st bass (body). I want a 5 and the wife says "no money honey" in the budget. So through carefull (and discrete) bidding on e-bay I have bought an EMG 40tw pup, An unused washburn bantum 5 string neck, black tuners and a black bridge. I'll need to pick up a 25k pot (the pup came with a push/pull preamp) and I'll need to pick up the battery parts. But other than that I think I'm set.
I have decided to do the body top (pix below)in wenge (love the look) and the back in hard ash (I think it'll make a nice contrast) I would much appreciate all the advice you guys can give me. I've been checking out all the builds on TB and I just had to build my own.
First up is shape. Since I bought my wood kinda' small (16"x 14") I'm limited on the design...here are a couple I've come up with. Can you guys help me with picking out the design?

Anti-gravity unit? Wenge can get very heavy.

I would definitely consider going with swamp ash to lighten the load a bit.

Went with this body. I like the looks, Kinda' looks like Shrek's head. In the sanding stage right now. I was wondering if I should sand the headstock to remove the logo? It's not going to be a Washburn and I was thinking of developing my own logo...any thoughts?
Thanks

Nice piece of wood! What's with the hole through, are you going to do front and back cavity covers?

what I did, because I don't have a router is to cut a bigger cavity (for batteries, it's active) in the back and a smaller one in front to put pots and jack. It's not really what I wanted to do but some times you need to use the tools you have. It's comming along pretty fast. Alot of sanding though, probably be doing the sanding for a couple of weeks. Anyone have a suggestion on how to finish the wenge top and the ash back? I was thinking min-wax/oil for the top and a clear finish for the back (I like the contrast) any help would be much appereciated.
Thanks

I really like the look of those 2 woods combined...

And the logo... Why not? I think custom logos are cool (gonna do one to my project too)
