Ric - that peavey neck won't fit to replace a regular Fender 4-string neck from what i can tell - which is what i was after.

the fret dots are an issue i have addressed w/ black permanent ink for the inlays and a dark stain for the rosewood fingerboard.
not pretty - but it works.

now that i know this conversion works, my next conversion will be a fret-dot free neck so as to not have this issue - the sidedots are easily addressed w/ a black permanent and white permanent marker - they all move up one fret!

i recommend using a functioning 34 bass with angled headstock and no fret inlays on the fingerboard. (epi toby, ibanez eda, curbow, squire deluxe J, etc... - well the squire does not have an angled headstock - but a stringtree can fix that).

just pull the nut and cut the 'new nut' out of the 1st fret fingerboard area - now the 1st fret is your zerofret. adjust sidedots to taste... voila a medium scale...
now watch your guitarist trying to figure out what note your fretting...

ebonalley - i have considered both of those medium 5-stringers - and hope/ look to end up with the Warwick some time very soon - but i have a custom jazz i LOVE (with Alembic electronics) for which i now have a 34 and exchangable 32 neck ... which makes me very happy!
all options to 'convert' that custom 34 into 32 (with any number of 32 necks) would have required moving the bridge at least some or other mods...

so this zerofret conversion worked quite wonderfully and cost me about $40 bucks and some elbow grease...

the 32 Peavey is the 'Rockmaster' - i believe they look at it as a beginner / youngsters instrument w/ the 32 allowing for smaller hands...

Thanks. Is it a 4 string only? That's all I can find so far.

xaxxat - i do believe it's 4-string only. as ebonalley pointed out, and as well documented in various threads here - there are few lower-$ options for 5-string medium scale.
that was part of what lead me to the idea here detailed...

JazzAd - thanks - so far the fact that the fret inlay dots in the Turser neck i converted are plastic and would not come out without a fight (they are painted over right now w/ permanent marker) is the only real issue i have ...

no rattle - other than i needed a new string tree to get the break angle i need on the fender style straight headstock -
therefore my recommendation to do this with an angled headstock-neck that has no fret inlays/dots in the fingerboard.

one disclaimer: for my personal playing style i had to put a bit more relief on this neck as i normally would.

i'm taking that disclaimer back - i had some high frets - have addressed those and now can ran the neck pretty straight.
i might do a 5-string toby like this as i won't have the $ for the new medium Warwick as soon as i'd like...

which is a nice instrument that SX is - you're right Mr. BeBop!

except that won't get you a 5 string - nor the custom 4 string w/ alembic electronics i now have with interchangeable 32 or it's original 34 neck : )

this was a test project for me to see if it could be done - and i am quite happy w/ the result!

I was kinda teasing But thanks for the pleasant response.

I didn't want it to turn into, Oh no, here comes one of THOSE SX FANBOYZ

I did say I was lazy and I don't have any Alembic parts

i think i realized that (the teasing part).

my bass teacher gave me the custom J w/ Alembics - it's a bass he built. i am still a bit at awe about that - so i wasn't going to mess with the integrity of the original instrument - i still have his 34 neck - a Warmoth neck i think - that can go back in place in minutes.

but if ye ask my beloved - there is really no reason for me to have two 4-string Js - ... so while i like the SXs - and actually had and de-feminized one of the Gypsy Rose 32 Pbasses as well - this one 4-string J will do fine hon! : )
