Is 320 Grit Okay?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm going to use Minwax Wipe On Poly in satin finish on my Krappy Twiggy EUB. I already has a linseed oil "finish." I just want something more durable. Anyway, the directions say to sand with 220 between coats. I couldn't find any 220 at the hardware store, but they did have 320. Will that be sufficient? Or should I wait until the store has the recommended 220? Thanks.

Are you trying to remove the old finish? 220 would be ok for that but follow up the 220 with 400 or 600. You can get it at automotive parts stores in the black wet or dry sandpaper.

Thanks, Rocky. No, I'm not trying to remove the old finish, I just want to seal it in with the poly. I just wanted to know if the 320 was okay for in between coats.

Just check it closely as you progess and if scratches are showing from the 320 than switch to finer paper.

Hi Johnny,

I think you might be a bit confused. The higher the number, the finer the paper. If 220 is good for between coats, then 320 will be fine also. Might just take a bit longer.

PS: I apologize if I spoke out of line.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure that the finer paper was going to do the trick. Ed, no worries; you're not out of line. Thanks again.

320 should be fine and better than 220. I generally use 400 for similar work. The quality of the paper is important. If the 320 is aluminium oxide or silicone carbide it should be fine. The open coat "no load" types are the best as they don't clog and can prevent a build up that might leave a mark. I think you'll be fine. You want to sand lightly anyhow. Clean off all the sanding residue well before the next coat.
