4 strings fretless build

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello! Not posted anything here for months... but now I wanted to show off this build. The owner wanted a warm but focused sounding fretless, lined and not too heavy.
The specs were decided were:

34" scale

21 lines

Padouk neck

Wengé fingerboard with Maple lines

Okoumé body with a slightly modified "SWAN" shape

2 AlNiCo5 humbuckers

front routing for controls with Padouk cover

Chrome hardware.

This is the fingerboard (raw and slotted).

Cool!

Wenge's a pretty odd choice for a fretless board, that'll be unfinished, right?

Some lemon oil, that's it
It's not an odd choice, I'm not the only builder who uses it a lot. I made lots of fretless fingerboard with Wengé, Bubinga, Padouk, Cocobolo... more than Ebony.

I've seen plenty of them fretted, but never fretless, should be cool as heck.

Body and neck glued in. Of course I'm showing pics of a completed build, it would be wonderful to work on 1 bass only, the progress would be fastest.
Follow the thread and you'll see how the fingerboard looked finished.

Looks pretty sweet. I know in the past you've made your own pickups, are you making these as well?

BTW, it's nice to see you post again.

Yes, I'm always using my pickups that are actually available as single and humbucker with AlNiCo, Neo and Ceramic magnets in wood and plastic shells.

Pics of the finished product
You can judge yourself how the Wengé fingerboard turned out. The guy who ordered it was extremely happy and so was I.

Thanx! One of those basses that made me think "Oh well, I should make a clone of this for myself"
Here you can see the fingerboard a bit better.
