45-130 too heavy for CGCFAb?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody,

I usually tune my 5 string to CGCFAb (that allows me to play extra harmonics..) using a 35-120 set of strings...I have an unused 45-130 and I was wondering if it'd be dangerous for the neck to use it for the same tuning...too much pressure?

Thanks very much!

Possibly not the right forum for this question.

Nevertheless, so long as you have a decent bass/neck, it shouldn't be dangerous, but will require a truss rod tightening. However, for the cost of a set of strings, you might find the increase in tension when you're playing more cumbersome than it's worth.

Are you looking for an increase in tension, or are you just looking to do something with the extra strings?

I don't mind the extra tension, i was in fact thinking of trying 40-125 for the same tuning...but yeah, the idea was to use these extra strings in some way...I have a Sting Ray5 by the way...

Thanks for your reply!

I would say that some of your strings will be VERY tense at this tuning.

You might try a lighter set first, and if you like it, see if someone wants to buy these strings off of you. I would guess that 45-130 is the most popular 5 string set.

Why the increase in tension? Do you want more tension everywhere, or just on certain strings?
