So I've had this thing sitting around my shop for a while now, slowly working on it as time permits. Well, I opened my big, fat mouth about maybe bringing it to a GTG next month. I figured if I posted my progress, it would give me some accountability. It's kind of an experiment so I didn't use the super-best woods. Actually, I don't even know what kind of wood the top or the fretboard are
Bass wood body, 3 piece with walnut stringers. It's huge. Like, 16" wide. I painted the inside for awesomeness and to coordinate with the other woods.
Mystery-wood top. I think it's some kind of cedar. It has a reddish-orange hue to it. It's very light. I did the "F hole" freehand, so don't hassle me about it not being perfect, I'm cool with it.
Mystery fretboard.. I scored three of these, pre-slotted off ebay for like, $20.00. Very stiff, heavy and dense. Again, they have a reddish-orange color. The neck is walnut and padouk.
Kinda-sorta what it's going to look like when it's done.
Ok, I want to get this done by October 23rd, so give me a hard time about finishing it, please. Sorry about the crappy pics... we are cameraless presently.

Macassar ebony didn't occur to me... Maybe... never seen it so red before but it feels like it could be... Thanks. |

How thick is the top? The two pointy bits that project downward on the treble and bass sides look like they would be prone to snapping of if they got any pressure, unless they had some kind of hidden support pin bridging them to the back. Especially if it is cedar, which cracks really easily along the grain.

Edit: Ok, i was looking at the pics on my blackberry...now that I see it more clearly it does look more like it could be rosewood or cocobolo. Here's a pic of a mac ebony board I have though, some red streaks.

P.S. Don't worry about the freehand stuff, "if it looks good to you" is what counts. |

The top looks like roasted birch, or something along those lines.

My guess is that the fingerboard is wenge.
I took an immediate dislike to the first picture, and then completely changed my mind when I saw the top. I like those openings! Keep it coming!

The top is 3/4 of an inch thick right now. I'll take it down a little, but not much in the interest of stability.
Thank you all for the comments. The weekend is here, so hopefully I can get some serious shop time. |

Spanish Cedar is really really similar to khaya mahogany or sipo. Ive got a big slab of quartersawn cedar tat looks a lot like your piece, maybe not that dark, but very close to it. Comes from a guy in BC. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
