So me and my guitar buddies decided to buy some wood 3 months ago for some guitars and about a week ago we found a shop to build in at a technical institute. The guy who is in charge of the shop is one awesome dude and we have about four hours of shop time to work on Mondays and Wednesdays.

(5-string) I'm building a five-string, 35" scale, fretless with a mahogany body and a five piece maple and bloodwood neck. I'm planning on using some bloodwood for the fretboard as well, but I ran out of it today cutting neck laminates so we'll see if I change my mind. The top wood was labeled at the local wood yard as granadillo.

I haven't officially decided on the electronics yet, but for now I might put the EMG's I have laying around in; this isn't my first choice though. Anyway I'll let the other guys put their info down . . .

(8-string) I'm making a neck-thru multi-scale guitar with a 7 piece laminated neck made of Oak, Maple, Purpleheart and Padauk. Still deciding on the body wood but I have a Zebrawood top and a Macassar Ebony fretboard. Planning on putting in Dimarzio pickups and possibly a piezo system. I'm totally stoked and I want to put this guy in right here

(7-string) My guitar is a 7 string and its the tits. well its going to be... hopefully. I heart

Thought I'd give a more in depth summary and post some pics since I was rushed last night cause the guys were having trouble being focused and posting things that were relevant. I've been lurking here in the LC for over half a year now so I'm excited to get building!

So yesterday was my first day in the shop and it was their second day there. I have all my neck laminates cut and they just need to be prepared for gluing. The other two have done the same and Grant (7-string) finished cutting all his pieces for his body.

On a side note we are from Utah, and as the guitar players are Mormon, Grant will be leaving on an LDS mission sometime in December so he may or may not finish before then. He's hoping to at least get all his woodworking stuff finished so that he can slap some electronics in when he gets back in a couple of years.

On the topic of electronics, there is a very butchered Alembic bass in the local guitar shop here. Some interesting individual committed hubris by trying to make the bass lighter. They haphazardly cut chunks off the body and turned the headstock into a tiny square. The body has been covered by a shiny coat of thick textured spray paint, hiding the beautiful quilted maple top than can only be witnessed through the small square of headstock veneer.

The owner of the guitar shop says the guy is trying to sell it, but probably won't get more than $500. I'm thinking if I can get the bass for fairly cheap the electronics alone would be worth the purchase and I would stick them in this bass.

Anyway, with out further a do here is the completed work so far. From left to right is the five string, the seven string, and the monster 8 string multi-scale (for a first build he sure is going for it!). I'll be back to post the updated progress tomorrow!

And the puns begin early!

I managed to stop by the guitar shop today on my way back from school and grabbed a shot of the Alembic in all of its . . . lack of glory (along with my lovely lady).

The shop owner actually purchased it as a refinish project but later changed his mind. They're asking $450 for it so I'm not entirely sure if its worth it; I think it was either an Exel or an Epic so it will have their lower end electronics (using the term low end to refer to anything Alembic feels a little weird).

It is obviously also a four string bass so I don't know how even the strings will be volume wise on the fiver (the pu's are 3.5 inches wide). A little advice from you guys about the price and volume evenness would be awesome.

A small amount of progress . . .

Got a little progress done yesterday, but since I had to grab a fretboard as well yesterday from the lumber yard I didn't get everything done that I wanted. I decided on mun ebony for the fretboard.

As you can see I also cut my body wings from my mahogany. We've also been waiting for a sanding belt so we can get all of the laminates nice and flat before gluing up, but I got as much work as I could get done on the joiner. Speaking of those laminates . . .

I really like the flaming on that far left piece, but it's a little weak on the other two. They might not look as nice, but it's all rock maple so I suppose it doesn't really matter all that much. I also manged to get a picture of my granadillo top.

As you can see I have a rough sketch of the bass side body wing showing there, but I'm not incredibly happy with it. I also have to attempt to bookmatch that top, but that would leave the top rather thin. How thick do you guys like your top? If my top would be too thin then I can always do it not bookmatched, but I would like the symmetry.

One piece of wood on my bass didn't get photographed, but I'm planning on doing a thin strip of zebra wood between the mahogany body and the granadillo top.

So I didn't get too much done yesterday, but I'm just about ready to start gluing. I will probably start that either on Monday or Wednesday next week depending on how far I get sanding the boards flat on Monday.
