I hereby propose a 30-day extension to the 5-string build off competition. The competition should end April 30th.

Being one of those slackers myself I'm all for an extension.. although 30 days is maybe a bit long.

30 days would let everyone get the fine-tuning done, and upload sound samples. I don't think anyone will be totally done by wednesday.

I have no opinion, I think it's up to you guys. I got what I wanted out of it, and that was to have some really cool builds and varying techniques brought to the fore in this forum, something that has been lacking greatly for years, while builders would use this fourm as an advertisement then disappear once they get enough attention.

This has been a group venture from the get go, so whatever the group decides, and I agree 30 days would help a few guys get completely done.

Sounds fine to me. I would not mind another week of curing time before I rub out my finish and the opportunity to get sound samples/video. I think it should also matter what Drake and Grantbass think since they both finished well in advance.

I may have to do that Brandon if I can't find a good fretless player around here, Or I am going to have to break out my Yamaha BB1000SF and start practicing, and that probably isn't going to happen... LOL

I'm up for it! Been loving the competition! You guys inspire me in my future endeavors! You may not think much of it, but thank you for all your hard work and expression of your creativity! Good luck to all who entered and I will definitely have a tough time deciding my personal winner( I don't know who votes). Thanks again and I am glad there is a proposed extension!

Well, there was no way I could have mine done in time so I would be all for it. Too many real life obstacles held me up the last 2 months but I'm getting back at it soon.

I am all for you guys being able to finish your builds. I think it is more about the quality and craftsmanship of the work rather than the speed in which it was completed, so I vote YES for the extension, if I have any say in the matter.

I don't think all of the entrants were ever listed in one place. Here's a list I made- did I miss anyone?

Simo: Fretless 5 String Competition - Simnett Guitars
Drake: Fretless 5 Comp, Drake Custom build
Barnaclebeau: 5 string fretless showcase: Habanero V
Big B.: Fretless five competition: Mad scientist edition
Musiclogic: 5 string fretless showcase-buildoff; Signature 2
Kev2007: Fretless 5 comp/showcase - the "*@#$ Cancer" Bass
Grant Bass: 5 string fretless comp.
Phil Mastro: Fretless 5-string Comp: Mastrobass
Reticle: My Fretless 5 comp entry.
phmike: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f57/5-...r-$100-725258/

I think we should wrap this thing up 1st of May with a poll, and leave it open for a week or so. Everyone could post a couple finished shots and a sound sample in the poll. Voting could be open to the whole of TB, but I think we ought to get together as competitors and vote on a 'builder's choice' as well.

EDIT: The threads above are in order of how they appear in the LC as of 8:54 AM EST on 29 March 2011. phmike: I don't know why the post doesn't show your thread's title as the link, everyone else's seems to do it automatically.

I'm in for the extension - I've got one coat of finish on, the electronics go in tomorrow, and then I'm on a plane again for a bunch of gigs. I feel like I'm rushing too much near then end here and don't want to ruin the many pleasureable hours of work I've put into this with a lousy finish!

It's cool with me, if Grant and PHMike are good, we have a concensus.

well; ive already been blown out of the water, so i'll take it as a personal victory finishing on time
and take it as an oppritunity to get some HQ pics and possibly some sound or video sample;
and aside from the present (concensual) setback, i would consider the experiment a total sucsess, and i was not ready at all for the level of talent that was interested in participating, so i hope we do it again, 90% of these builds were the best looking/original ideas ive ever seen documented; no foolin.
so no reservations here, and hope to see you all involved in another round soon, so put the thinking caps on and inspire some more folks that were on the side lines for this one wishing they would have joined in
-grant

I usually hang out more on the DB side, but have been lurking here a few weeks. I love this build off thread!! I thoroughly impressed by the high level of craftsmanship, creative woodworking solutions and creative designs here. Fender would do well to fire it's entire R&D staff and just sub this thread - and pay you guys. Not kidding! A Fender "Habanero" or "Mad Scientist" would more likely send me shopping at GC than the billionth rendition of a J or P bass with this week's teeny bopper band bass genius’s signature on it.
Excellent work!

I am doing a restoration of a former school dumpster upright bass now but may join you in a future build. Inspiring. I’m all for an extension. Would hate to see it end.

I've wanted to build just a straight-up 4/4 sized upright since I had one in the 90's. I might have to spend some more scratch on tools...
