5 string strung E,A,D,G,C?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is it necessary to have to bring my 5string in to my Luthier in order to string it E-C. Does the nut really need to be prepared and altered, or is this just something that "helps"? Please give some sort of support for your answers, thanks!

you shouldnt need to alter the nut. you might have to move the saddles on the bridge to get proper intonation though. ive done this on two different basses without a problem. just get new strings (i just used the higher 5 from a 6 string set) and have fun!

You may, but good chance you won't. Give it a shot and see if it works, if it doesn't then get a new nut. Luckily my basses have a zero fret so its not an issue.

You only need to alter the nut if you experience buzzing after you change the strings. If there's no buzz, you're good to go!

Hi.

If the intonation is now correct, just move the saddles as You change the strings. If You start from the B -> E, You'll have the correct location on the saddle below.

If You have a straight headstock with just a little downward pressure on the nut, you most probably have to change the nut. If You have an angled headstock, You'll probably be good to go. The only way to find out is to try .

Regards
Sam

Do you mean buzzing on the frets? or buzzing on the open notes?

He means buzzing on the open strings. When you go from heavy strings to lighter ones, as you will in going from BEADG to EADGC, sometimes to thinner strings will rattle in the oversize nut slots. If you hear buzzes on the open strings and you have adequate neck relief and string height, take it to a pro and have them make you a new nut.

I had mine set up with an B-E-A-D-G set, and then broke one, and decided to immediately string it up with E-A-D-G-C. No problems, not nut issues. It works great.
