First off, happy new year!
Did the final shaping with my sand role-bar. And some better daylight pictures for the color witch are hard to capture.

Very nice. It should be interesting to see how the layers display after you shape the backside.

I have got al the wood for the body sanded to thickness on my drumsander. And sorted all the wood for what goes where.
Mid section is also ready. Soon I glue these up.

Upper wing (from left to right: macassar ebony, andaman padouk, shedua/ovangkol, andaman padouk, cocobolo)

Lower wing

Beautiful woods! Sounds heavy, though.

Thanks! Yes i am a little worried about the weight too. But the body is going to be very thin, like 31 mm in total. Shedua core is 17 mm thick.

Have you though about chambering? You are using a top, so that could removes some of the weight.

Yes I thought about chambering. But I won't take the risk since the body is going to be carved(and loses a lot weight from that also). Also my second build, same model, contains a lot of heavy woods. That bass only weighs a little less than 4kg. So I don''t think weight will be a problem.

Well change of plans I am not going to use the ovangkol/shedua. Main reason; it is heavy and I can't risk that since this is a 6 string bass.
So I started again the frustraiting hunt for flame/burl walnut. After days of searching and emailing I found this one:

I think this one will do as body core, the piece is 60mm thick

You're going to use that as a body core where it won't be seen?

Ha ha well the body is going be heavily carved so you can see the edges of the wood very well. (top is very thin so you can see a great deal of walnut)

Finally took the leap of buying these bores for making wooden knobs: (was on my wish list for a long time; these things are really expensive. But I got them for a real fair price from germany) Got 3 sizes; 2 for making stacked knobs; 1 for normal knobs)

Cut the walnut core. Took a while before I received it, and let it rest for while.
Was really hard to get the usable wood out of this on. A lot of tears on the sides (it has been dried for 10 year the owner told me). First I made it square and that took most of the tears away.
This is de core for the wings, there is also a center block (3 piece body)

Do you mind if I ask where you ended up getting the walnut from? I'm in the middle of a similar search and not having luck.

Oh, okay. Yeah, shipping probably would be too expensive. Thanks.

I have glued the upper wing and cut it with belt saw. It a Macassar ebony top, burl(ish) walnut core and cocobolo back with padouk laminates.

Made the electronic cover for the lower wing. Took the cover out with a scroll saw and put some veneer on it to fill the saw line.
