7, 8 and 9-inch radius gauges?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have the nice 8-piece understring radius gauges kit from stewmac, but 3 of my basses have a different:

- 92/93 CIJ Fender Jazz: probably 7-inch
- 87 Peavey Patriot: 9-inch
- 92 Peavey Fury: 8-inch

I am looking for the right tool to do the job right, in this case set up string height using an understring radius gauge.

Is there a vendor somewhere which carry these?

Thanks!

I've been doing setups for over 20 years and have never used an understring radius gauge. I have the same set of automotive feeler gauges to check string heights at various locations. I've also never had a single person complain to me about their setup either. Maybe I should be looking into these, but I always thought of these kinds of tools as kind of snake-oilish. They are nice and handy, but do they pay for themselves? Am I totally missing the boat here?

Considering I did a setup with one last night and that it was spot on, using the Jerzy Drozd method, it pays for iself with the first setup.

I realize they will work and are clever, but I don't see how they are anything more than cost cutting due to time savings. My setups don't take that long as it is, and I don't have a busy shop in which I need to shave time off my tasks, so when I compare $30+ including shipping versus the $0.99 cents I spent 25 years ago on my feeler gauges, I don't see the justification!

It is a different method, that's all.

I have feeler gauges as well.
