70's Maya bass w/ busted neck - worth the buy?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi! this is my first post here in Talkbass and i figured the Luthier subforum was the right place for my question! (correct me if i'm wrong please!)

A local guy is selling me his 1972 Maya replica of a Fender Jazz bass (beautiful looking, by the way) for about $250. The only thing is that the neck is pretty much busted. I took it to a local luthier so he could check it before i bought it and he told me that the wood wouldn't move anymore although the truss rod is still functional.

The neck has a slight but pretty noticeable concave bow to it.

My question is: Is the bass worth buying even if the neck is done? Would the bow just keep augmenting as the years go by or what will happen to the neck if it cannot be adjusted?

The guy has replaced the pickups with new Samarium cobalt noiseless, and he bought the original fender pickup and bridge guards, as well as new volume pots, which make the bass look and sound very decent. The tuning pegs are quite loose so i might have to replace them, but i want to know whether or not the busted beck is a deal breaker.

Any opinions will be really appreciated!

If you need any more info, let me know!

Thanks guys!

If the truss rod is still functional couldnt you just try adjusting it to remove the bow?

Most old fender clones arent worth much, especially not with possible problems.

The local luthier it took the bass to told me that the neck just won't move anymore, he tried adjusting it by using the truss rod but the neck stayed the same. I'm no expert at this kind of thing so i'm just passing the information he gave me on...

I think i'll just spend a little more and maybe get a Fender MIM Jazz bass and avoid any future problems...

I woudl suggest avoidning the bass. For $350 there are plent of other options. Even more so if you save up a bit.

You can buy a pretty good second hand bass with that money - a quick search on ebay >>> squire, yamaha, ibanez...cort... for less than that.

For that price it should be 100% functional. Pass.
