About how much?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, I was wondering what some of you guys would expect the wood for a 5-piece maple/walnut or maple/wenge neck to cost? It would be for a 34" neck-thru. This will be my first build so I'm trying to scope out how much it would cost to do it that way as opposed to a bolt-on so I don't have to route the neck pocket. Thanks!

depends on the grade of the wood you buy, and where you buy it from. For nice wood, quartersawn maple, and walnut $25 to $30 for wenge, add another 25. Just an estimate. Too many factors to be precise.

Are you looking to have the neck built completely, just glued up into a block, or just getting the wood and making it from scratch?

Just the wood.

Musiclogic - 25-30 for the whole shabang? I'd have thought more!

Wenge is around $10-15/bf, hard maple around $4-8.

Depends on how you glue it up, figure you'll need 4 1"x2"x4' strips, 3 for the mains and 1 for the stringers.

The wood you use will be in the $30 range but few places will sell you boards that small.

Wenge is pushing upwards of $20.00/bf in some markets due to the unrest and problems in the Congo region. Limba is getting scarce again as are many African woods. I've had an order in for 2000bf since April. Those knuckleheads should stop fighting and start logging for us

Send in the UN!

Pull all your money out of the stock market and speculate on wenge!

I think we've fallen a bit off topic, but... one way you can get just the wood you need without buying a 15' board of wenge is to buy it from a guy like Larry that sells to instrument makers. A few extra bux, but it saves you the trouble of having to find a board that is not bowed or kinked, too. And fewer splinters.

Yep, got an estimate from Larry. It was a bit more than I had hoped though (About $95), so I'm looking at alternative plans.

Just like in every other aspect of life you get what you pay for......Larry's a great guy, and I'll be ordering wood from him early next week.

Yep, from my dealings with him he seems to be a great guy. I will definately be buying from him, although probably something a bit cheaper.
