ACHIEVING A SUNBURST FINISH - is this method OK??

Sign in to disble this ad
I have my Jazz shaped bass body back to bare wood on my way to achieving a Sierra Sunburst colouring. Having already applied coats of red mahogany wood dye, thinned down a bit, I am thinking of how to get the sunburst appearace.
At this stage, can I just use a black dye or stain and apply it with a cloth wrapped round a finger to all the edges, getting paler as it melds in with the plummy colour applied?
Is this OK or does anyone have any other tips?? I hope to be finishing the whole thing with many coats of thinned clear varnish applied by cloth.

Thanks

I've done sunbursts like you described - it works fine. After all the staining I did extra sanding with fine paper toward the center of the body to fade it a bit more.
