I recommend Elixirs - med gauge. The sound good and last a long time. Of course, string preference depends on what you're trying to do with your guitar, the kind of tones you're trying to generate, as well as playing style (gentle folkie, hardcore punk..somewhere in between). Anyway, for a place to start, I really recommend Elixirs because of the fact that you can put a set on a guitar and they will last.
