Advice on fixing a 'burst finish and head screw holes.

Sign in to disble this ad
Got a pawn shop deal, and while I have never really been a fan of 'burst finishes, this one is starting to grow on me. The problem is, there's some scrapes and dings I'd like to fix, I'm just not sure how.

The best part is, most of the major damage is on the edges, which are black. Should I just lightly rub with some 000 steel wool or sandpaper, and cover them with nail polish (as I did with a minor ding on a painted black P I got once)? or is there a better way?

My other issue is, the previous owner installed a rouge tuner that apparently didn't line up with the original's holes. Should I use wood filler to patch them up? Or the toothpick and glue method?

Thanks in advance for the forthcoming info.

I'd personally not touch the Black dings. Shows character and a life of use.

toothpicks and woodglue on the headstock holes, sand flat and then redrill.

See, to me, the location and visual impact of the dings, shows abuse and lack of care for the instrument.

lack of care, or used alot? in my experience if you take an instrument to jams, to gig, and use it alot, you will eventually knock it against stuff, and it is usually around the bottom and back edges, and on the ends of the horns. Nicks like that iritate me when they happen but in time it shows the stories of the guitar.

The scratches, dents that I hate are ones caused when the guitar is dropped, knocked over etc. And those leave gashes on the neck, headstock, head, body face. Those I would be more likely to repair.

And that is a reason I am not a fan of hard poly finishes, They are very resiliant and rarely scratch and small dents arenot that visible. But if it hit hard enough is shatters and flakes off in chunks.

Just my 2 cents, I would never think of 'relicing' a guitarbut I do like the worn look. It might be part of being 45.

The funny part is, the more time I spend with it (I'm taking it apart for cleaning and inspection), the more I'm getting used to it.

Maybe I'm not a snob after all.

And to clarify, all I meant by my response to stflbn, was that the damage doesn't say "wear" to me, you know? Waer has smoother transitions, and well, looks like wear. No offense was meant, and I hope none taken.

Like my Guitard told me last night after he got a look at it, "At least it's in the black, so a marker would cover it without too much stress and strain."

I'm still got to do something about the holes in the headstock.
