ADVICE: Refinish a Neck?

Hello.

I have a Schecter Dimond Series J bass which I like, however, I do not like the glossy, smooth-as-glass finish on the back of the neck. I much prefer the satin type finish, or even no finish at all. I have decided to keep the bass, but need to remove that glossy finish. The neck is maple with a RW FB. The finish is not paint, but rather some type of clear coat.

Suggestions please on the best way to do this.

I would start by just removing the gloss on thye back of the neck with some 0000 steel wool... that way the neck is still protected, but it will *totally* change the feel.

You don't reccommend removing the finish altogether?

Not generally, at least not on maple. Maple gets *really* dirty, *really* fast, and a satin neck doesn't feel that much different from a bare or oiled neck...
