Question Advice on sourcing wood

Sign in to disble this ad
Dear all,

Well, it's getting to that time where I'm starting to think about making Bass #2! Unfortunately I have more time than money, so I was thinking about finding hardwoods in thrift stores, manifesting as tables or entertainment centres and so on.

I went around a couple of the Arc thrift stores here in Denver a bit earlier, and came across a couple of things...mainly entertainment centres, that appeared to have been made of Oak, with no obvious laminate 'giveaways'. Granted, there were a few things like that!

Does anyone have any suggestions about what to look for in this situation?

Also, if this turns out to be a bit of a fruitless exercise, can anyone recommend any good sources for lumber? In our local Lowe's all I've found that may be of any use are Poplar, Alder and Red Oak...and that's about it!

Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

Dan

If your in Denver, you should check out Austin Hardwoods. They don't have a big selection, but they have really good prices. You might be able to buy some raw wood to build a bass for the same price as used furniture.

I've built a bass from rough lumber club #2 (I'm pretty sure).

Thanks very much for the info jworrellbass! I've just had a quick look on Google maps, and they're less than 10 miles from me, so I'll get in touch with them. The list on their website looks like a pretty good selection too, and it's still a lot better than Lowe's offerings!

I bought some 8/4 wenge, zebra and padauk from them in August. Great prices. Let me know what you think, or bought.
