Just signed up today. I just finished my very first bass that I built from scratch a couple of weeks ago so I thought this might be a good place to start off. Here's a pic. http://www.budlecompte.com/pics/proto/neg00001.jpg I'm on number two already. I feel an addiction coming on.

Bud | Welcome Bud
I'm sure you will see a few familiar faces from AGB here on TB.
Nice bass! Is your second going to be the same design?

Nice shot with your first. Best feature: The dark (wood?) fret marker dots.
Love 'em! |

| Thanks. The next bass will be an early 50's P-bass look-a-like, poplar (or is it tulip) body, except it'll be fretless with an ebony fingerboard, jazz pickups, painted gloss black with a white pickguard. After that it's back to the original design with improvements. |

Care to elaborate on your use of woods, such as what's the neck center stripe, and are the body stripes just decorative?
I'll link a few pics here to show everyone what I'm talking about; if this will kill your bandwidth, let me know and I'll remove them from this post.

I inherited a bunch of wood from an uncle who passed away several months ago. Since this bass was a prototype of sorts I didn't want to spend a lot on it. Most of the wood came from him. The core of the body is a bunch of various hardwoods run through the thickness planer and glued up symetrically. The spalted maple top is the only wood I purchased for the project. The back is cherry. I don't know what kind of wood the center stripe of the neck is. It's not maple. It was very hard though and had a tight grain so I used it. The main thing was to try out some techniques and ultimately end up with a playable bass. Goal accomplished. Sounds great too. It makes its gig debut this evening. |

bass #1 looks pretty slick, I dig the dark dots too. The shape is nice, different but not too odd |

Since the poplar isn't very spectacular and has that greenishness about it I'm going to go for the tuxedo look. The white pickguard and chrome hardware against a gloss black body should make for a nice looking bass.

and thanks... Chris Benavente built them. I wish I had 1/16th the talent he does.
He'd built one with bart soap bars in black with white guard first for himself first... I'm pretty sure he still uses it in his band (he's got a butterscotch too)
This one was one of the first production versions http://www.benaventeguitars.com/twins.htm my white one came shortly after. Mine is a hotrod Jazz in a vintage P suit... the perfect fretted bass for me. The fretless 6 is my #1 though... incredible feel and tone... it has a stablized birds eye board from galleryhardwoods.com I recommend checking it out sometime if you haven't already.
Where do you get your wood? I dig the top on the first one. |

can't wait to see what you do next! | Glad to be here. I sprayed the first few coats of clear on the fretless' neck last night. Came out really nice. I'll start painting the body next weekend. I've been planing body blanks this weekend too. I've got three glued up minus the top wood. Can't twait to make some more sawdust. Having a blast.
