Im formulating what I want in my new custom 5 from fellow TBer rick0link and I just wanted to get some feedback on what I am envisioning. Trying to get a combo of Tim's tone on RATM Evil empire CD, the old Spector tone (think Eddie Jackson Queensyrche), and Living Colour's Muzz Skillings on Times up . Weird yes, I know.
So what Im thinking is quilted maple body wings with a 5 piece neck either maple/ebony or maple/wenge. Quilted(or birdseye) maple fretboard. Leaning towards a JJ pickup set up but I always seem the not like the sound of bridge Js
when they're soloed. I am considering a soapbar or Musicman pickup for the bridge too. I wanted to go Aguilar pickups, but Ive used barts and duncan pickps pretty much exclusively my whole life. Ive had Aguilar pickup preamps and used to have a DB 359 and loved it more than life itself. But thats what Im thinking....here is my fear...Is all that maple and ebony gonna make it too bright? My other basses are mahogany/rosewood, Flame Maple/Wenge and bubinga/pau ferro. I am looking for a contrast to my stable. I just fear that for a guy that lives on the low B I still want to have a major low end with that maple snap on the top.
Any thoughts, criticisms, concerns etc would be sincerely appreciated
